Rising Star

Nearly five years ago, Tiashana Morris was sitting at home unsure if she would ever touch a basketball court again. After playing as a freshman at Landstown High School, Tiashana opted to transfer to Salem. However, due to issues stemming from Morris’ transfer, she was not allowed to participate in high school athletics for the next two seasons. Despite the missed time, Morris’ confidence in her ability on the court never wavered. But for a while that seemed like a moot point with her eligibility up in the air until her senior year.

“It was tough seeing my team win games and practice like I wish I was doing. I couldn’t get out there and contribute,” Morris said.

Morris would return for her senior season with the Lady Sun Devils, finishing with 14 points and five assists in her first game back against Cox. At 6-foot-1, Morris was one of the top shooters in the area earning a second-team All-Beach district selection. But the missed time coupled with substandard SAT scores led her to Monroe Community College in New York.

“Playing at Monroe, I felt like I did a great job. I played hard and practiced every day. When I wasn’t practicing I had my head in the books,” Morris noted.

After starting as a freshman, Morris was relegated a reserve role this past season as Monroe went to a smaller lineup. She still finished the season with averages of 12 points, three rebounds and two blocks per contest. This past weekend she was one of the standouts at the A.S.S.I.S.T. unsigned senior showcase, showing the three-point shooting ability just like her days at Salem. Cornel Parker, who has trained Morris since middle school, was in attendance for her shooting display, including a streak of four consecutive three-point baskets.

Recently, Morris took an unofficial visit to Lynchburg College an interest from Livingstone will also likely land her on the Lady Bears’ campus later this spring. But for now Morris is simply taking the recruiting process in with another chance to land at a high-major university.

“Right now I’m taking visits but my options are open. But I’m hearing from Livingstone, Elizabeth City State, Virginia Union, Lynchburg and Alferd State.
